I find it's helpful to think of Christianity the way we think of golf: The vast majority of all who pursue both get much wrong. Yet, greatness and success are possible: For example, it's possible to hit a "hole in one" in golf yet very few do. And if you follow "the way" of both, you can continue to get better at each.
So my best advice is to not judge either golf or Christianity by the "typical" golfer or Christian (who get much wrong) but to learn about both by looking to those who do them best (golfers like Tiger Woods or Christians like the saints).
