Part of the story some may not know: Forty years ago this month the Solidarity movement was born in Poland, using 2+2=4 as one of the most powerful political messages ever.

When Communists cracked down on Solidarity, the people fought back by putting signs in their windows that simply said "2=2=4,'' knowing the Communists couldn't demand the signs be removed without looking stupid.

Most knew it was a direct response to the Orwellian claim about 2=2 not adding up to 4 if the government said so. However, these messages (and many who repeat them to this day) were designed to say Truth is Truth. The numbers add up or they don't.
