Christina! THANK YOU so for your thoughtful response. I truly appreciate it. You raised a very interesting point about the priest issuing a statement. That made me wonder if he withheld communion and then reported it to the media or if it broke some other way (I used to be a newspaper reporter) so I tracked down the reporter who “broke’’ the original story and asked him. He wrote me back very quickly (a nice young man) and said said he got a call “from someone who had a friend that attended the Mass.’’ The reporter then contacted the Father, who issued his “statement’’ as an email response to the question. It appears to be the only comment he’s issued, a reply to the reporter’s question. So for the record (good to know) neither the priest nor Joe Biden’s people sought publicity about this story. Your question makes me wonder: has Biden been denied communion before and it simply didn’t make the press? I suppose that could be the case. Regarding your Catholicism, I highly recommend a fairly new (and short) book by Bishop Robert Barron called “Letter to a Suffering Church.’’ He has several great videos as well on all sorts of topics. It’s easy to judge a church based the actions of the people but it’s worth remembering, the Catholic Church isn’t a business or an association. It was founded by Jesus and every one who has been baptized is a cell within that body. Yes, the priest is supposed to do the job Jesus did but none of us can measure up to that standard: we are all sinners trying to become the best versions of ourselves we can be. Again, thank you so much for your response! Will pray for you and your family.
